PROGRAM BBA
SEMESTER 1
SUBJECT CODE & NAME - BBA 101 - COMMUNICATION SKILLS

1. Depending on the channel used and the style of communication, there can be various types of communication. Explain the various types of communication based on channels and style.

Communication  is  a  process  that  involves  exchange  of  information, thoughts, ideas and emotions. Communication is a process that involves a sender who encodes and sends the message, which is then carried via the communication  channel  to  the  receiver  where  the  receiver  decodes  the message, processes the information and sends an appropriate reply, via the same communication channel.
Communication may be verbal or non-verbal. Verbal means “that includes words,”  and  communication  without  words  is  known  as  non-verbal communication. Verbal communication may be oral or written.

Types of communication based on communication channels

Based  on  the  channels  used  for  communicating,  the  process  of communication can be broadly classified as verbal communication and  nonverbal  communication.  Verbal  communication  includes  written  and  oral communication,  whereas  the  non-verbal  communication  includes  body language,  facial  expressions  and  visuals  diagrams  or  pictures  used  for communication.

2. Discuss different types of communication network practiced in an organization.

Communication Network refers to a simple form or means of  intersection of lines in  all  directions  where messages are sent with high accuracy, speed and smoothness. In other words,  it is the pattern of  communication  among all the employees within  the organization and where  a number of individuals are  involved.  It  is  seen  that  if  the  channel  of  communication  is  long  and seem an unending process, then,  the communication can either be delayed or distorted. On the contrary,  if the channel of communication is narrow  the flow of communication is restricted.
It has been shown that communication patterns or network influence groups in several important ways.

We quickly glance through the text, move our eyes quickly over the pages to look  for  relevant  words  or  phrases  that  would  give  us  the  required information  or  lead  us  to  it.  This  method  is  usually  used  for  reading particular lists, sentences, paragraphs,

2.  What is the meaning of organisation design? Explain the following elements of Organization Structure:
(a) Hierarchy
(b) Division of work
(c) Unity of command

Basic elements of organization structure

There are a few important factors that influence the choice and design of an organization’s structure. For smooth conduction of activities one needs to be aware  of  these  elements.  Let  us  now  discuss  the  basic  and  important elements of organization structure.

a)  Hierarchy  –  it  is  an  important  concept  as  it  depicts  the  creation  and linkage between other components of the organization.  It is also known as the ‘chain of command’.  As we know,  an organization is sliced into three  levels  viz,  top,  middle  and  bottom  level.  Across  these  levels  are many positions that are held by people. Depending upon these positions people  enjoy  their  authority  and  responsibilities. People  placed  at  the  top  in  the  pyramid  enjoy  a  large  amount  of authority.  The  moment  we  climb  down  the  pyramid,  employees  start having more of obligations to be fulfilled towards their seniors and enjoy minimum  amount  of  authority.  This  unbroken  line  of  authority  and

Learning  is  defined  as  a  relatively  permanent  change  in  behaviour  (Akin 1987). In the context of organisation, one  of the managerial challenges is to instill productive work behaviours in his employees.

Learning  is  also  defined  as  the  process  of  acquiring,  assimilating,  and internalizing  cognitive,  motor,  or  behavioural  inputs  for  their  effective  and varied use when required, leading to an enhanced capability for further selfmonitored learning.

1  a.  Determine the decimal equivalent of the given number (38.36)8
b.  determine the decimal equivalent of the given number (511)16

Answer:
a.  Decimal to octal conversion- formula

Octal  Fraction  to  Decimal  In  order  to  obtain  decimal  equivalent  of  the given octal number, you should multiply each digit of the octal number by its weighted position, and each weighted values is added together to get the decimal number. The exponential expressions of each fractional placeholder are  8-1,  8-2,  and  this  way  the  exponent  notation  proceeds.

Consider  the following example.

SUBJECT CODE & NAME - BBA104
QUANTITATIVE TECHNIQUES IN BUSINESS

1.  Give a brief description of the different measures of central tendency. What are the advantages and disadvantages of the three common averages: Mean, Median and Mode?

Measure of Central Tendency

The most important objective of statistical analysis is to determine a single value  for  the  entire  mass  of  data,  which  describes  the  overall  level  of  the group of observations. It is a single figure and  describes  the entire series of observations  with  their  varying  sizes.  A  single  number  describing  some features of a frequency distribution is called descriptive  statistics. There are various ways in which frequency curves can differ from one another.   Even though  the  „general‟  shapes  of  the  curves  are  the  same  (the  area  under them  is  already made equal  by the strategy of plotting the percent ensity),
the  details  of  the  shape  may  change.  Below fig   shows  the  curve  B  has  a smaller  spread  than  A.

2.  Explain the following:
a.  Control charts for variables
b.  Control charts for attributes
c.  Acceptance sampling

2. a. Control charts for variables

Control  charts  for  variables  monitor  characteristics  that  can  be  measured and  have  a  continuous  scale,  such  as  length,  diameter,  height,  weight, volume, or width. When an item is inspected, the variable being monitored is measured and recorded. For example, if we were producing soap, thickness of the soap might be an important variable. We could take samples of soapsand measure their thickness. Two of the most commonly used control charts for variables monitor both the central tendency of the data (the mean) and the variability of the data (either the standard deviation or the range). Note that  each  chart  monitors  a  different  type  of  information.  When  observed values  go  outside  the  control  limits,  the  process  is  assumed  not  to  be  in control. Production is stopped, and

Ans. 2 (b) : Control charts for attributes
When sample units are classified into two categories (yes or no, success or failure), measurement is by attribute.  Control charts for attributes are used to  measure  quality  characteristics  that  are  counted  rather  than  measured. For example, this could be the number of defective components, the number of  rotten  mangoes,  the  number  of  scratches  on  walls,  or  the  number  of disciplinary  actions  against

Consumer Price Index Number

Consumer  Price  Index  Number  is  an  index  number  of  the  cost  met  by  a specified  class  of  consumers  in  buying  a  „basket  of  goods  and  services‟. The “baskets of goods and services‟‟ mean goods and services needed in day  to  day  life  of  the  specified  class  of  consumers.  The  pattern  of consumption  of  goods  is  different  in  different  classes  which  differ  due  to their income variation.
